Abstract/Summary:
The overseas entry mode of multinational enterprises has always been a hot topic in academic research. In the past, scholars have studied the influencing factors of entry mode choice from different theoretical perspectives. But the research on innovation ability and the entry mode choice still presents a mixed state. Most of the research is based on overseas investment samples from developed countries, and the reference value for overseas investment of Chinese multinationals is not high.Secondly, many scholars have done a lot of research on the influence of institutional distance between countries on the choice of multinational enterprises’ entry modes. However, most of the existing studies on institutional factors is limited to the single perspective, and there are relatively few studies that integrate different perspectives. Therefore,it is necessary to comprehensively consider the influence of factors from different perspectives on the choice of entry mode of multinational enterprises. This paper takes Chinese top 100 multinational enterprises as the research object to analyze the influence of innovation ability on the choice of Chinese multinational enterprises’overseas investment entry mode.It also discusses the different dimensions of the institutional distance to moderate the relationship between the innovation ability of enterprises and the entry mode. This paper sorts out the multinational enterprises which at least have one overseas subsidiary and is a listed company from the "Chinese top 100 multinational enterprises".lt collects 253 overseas investments by 53 enterprises between 2010 and 2017.The empirical analysis combined with the microdata of the enterprise and the macro data of the host country, this article draws the following conclusions:The stronger the innovation ability, the more the multinational enterprises tend to choose the wholly-owned entry mode;Formal institutional distance negatively moderates the relationship between innovation ability and entry mode;Informal institutional distance positively moderates the relationship between innovation ability and entry mode. The above conclusions are a good complement to the previous research.
