Nowadays, the people with high-order thinking ability, also called high-quality talents, should not only have gorgeous knowledge and skills, but also have the ability of analyzing information, solving problems and innovation.Geography is a subject which studies the earth ’s surface environment and the relationship between people and geographical environment. It has the common characteristics of natural science and social science, which is comprehensive and regional. Therefore, there are many characteristics of geographical thinking, such as comprehensive, logical, critical, dialectical etc.Geography plays an important role in the development of student thinking. It can change students’ thinking from simple and specific to complex and abstract, which is a process of developing to high-order thinking.Geography Teaching has become the basic way to cultivate and develop the ability of students’ higher-order thinking. This research is based on Bloom’s cognitive goal classification theory and Sternberg’s ternary intelligence theory. This paper, taking high school geography as an example, investigates the development status of high school students’ high-order thinking ability, analyzing the survey results and drawing up the teaching strategies for high school geography teaching to develop students’ higher-order thinking skills. After reading the literature of higher-order thinking ability, the connotation and performance of higher-order thinking ability could be clarified in this study.Combining with the characteristics of geography discipline, the study put forward the specific manifestation of high-order thinking ability in geography discipline, including analytical thinking ability, evaluative thinking ability and creative thinking ability.According to Bloom’s cognitive goal classification theory,Sternberg’s ternary intelligence theory and constructivist learning theory, research questionnaires have been designed, which is implied to investigate the situation of high-order thinking ability among high school students and the geography teachers’ teaching practice about it.Through investigation,it revealed that the thinking level of the most high-school students is currently in low-order thinking stage.Meanwhile, the development extent of high-order thinking ability is relatively low.For students ’geographic learning, they prefer to focus on obviously phenomena, principles and laws instead of understanding and exploring the essence hidden those phenomena, principles and laws.Although high school geography teachers have realized the importance of developing students ’higher-order thinking abilities, the development of students’ higher-order thinking abilities in actual geography teaching is rare. The reason for this phenomenon is mainly due to the lack of the creation of teaching environments.Lack of theoretical guidance and specific feasible implementation methods.According to the current situation, three suggestions for cultivating students’ high-order thinking in high school geography teaching and the cautions that should be noticed during implementation are put forward.Specifically speaking, they are fully utilizing geography experimental teaching, geographical map teaching and task-driven teaching to develop their high-order thinking ability. The study also designed the teaching plan of the "Thermal Circulation" lesson to provide a reference for front-line teachers.Studying geography teaching about the high-level thinking of students in high school can bring several benefits.Firstly,it can help school to master the current effect of geography teaching.Secondly,it is beneficial for teachers to grasp the students ’ learning situation and reflecting the problems in teaching. In addition, analyzing students’ timely changes in learning methods and habits is also helpful for students.Last but not least, these can provide the evidence for the transformation of high school geography teaching methods, and play a guiding and guiding role in training students’ higher-order thinking skills in various subjects in the future. |
