The advent of the era of big data has made it possible to realize the personalized learning in higher education institutions.With the help of big data technology,teachers can easily access,store and analyze various data of college students' learning and growth,and know the real situation of each student in real time,so as to provide personalized learning resources and learning services.American universities are very successful in implementing personalized learning with the help of big data technology.The United States has upgraded big data to the national strategic level,and many well-known universities have launched research programs about educational big data.Among them,Austin Peay State University's Degree Compass project,Purdue University's Course Signals program and Arizona State University's e Advisor program are distinctive.These effective practices have become typical examples of implementing personalized learning with the help of big data technology.This paper intends to take the personalized learning projects of these three universities as the research object,and expound the progress,characteristics,mechanisms and trends of personalized learning in American universities in the era of big data.In addition to the introduction,the full text includes five parts.The first part defines the core concepts,attempts to determine the connotation of big data and educational big data,learning and personalized learning,and provides a theoretical basis for the study of personalized learning in the era of big data.The second part combs the development process of big data intervention in American university's personalized learning,from the emergence of online learning in the embryonic stage to the development of data mining technology and learning analysis technology in the exploration stage,and the development of adaptive learning system in the final practice stage.The third chapter analyzes the typical practices of personalized learning projects of the three universities,including the background of the project,the specific implementation of the project,and the practical results of the project.The fourth part summarizes the characteristics of the personalized learning projects of American universities,including the following aspects:data-based scientific management,technology-based professional selection,prediction-based curriculum recommendations,and process-based evaluation feedback.The fifth part is based onthe comparative analysis of different situations in Chinese and American universities,and discusses the enlightenment of the practice of personalized learning in American universities to the construction of personalized learning system in Chinese universities,including the following aspects: building a big data application platform for universities;cultivating a team of big data talents;the data management of teaching should be based on the student-oriented concept;the evaluation should be based on formative evaluation;and the improvement of laws and regulations for student information security.
