Left-behind children are a large group of vulnerable groups in our country, and have always been deeply concerned by our government and the public. In April 2019,the Ministry of Civil Affairs and other ten departments promulgated the "Opinions on Further Improving the Care Service System for Left-behind Children and Children in Difficulties in Rural Areas." The "Opinions" pointed out that the village committees should appoint college-graduate village officials or professional social workers and other personnel as "child directors" to take better care of children who live in difficulties, and priority is given to the female members of the village committees. How do the children's directors think of their identity, how their identity is constructed in the social structure, and how do they understand, internalize, identify or alienate this identity? How do they answer the question of "Who Am I?" This is the research question of this article. This article takes County S of Hunan Province as the research field to collect data through observation and interviews. As the target of policy, child director must face the construction of external systems firstly, which is also the basis for the child director to obtain the legality of identity. But at the same time, under the construction of the coercive force of the policy, they will take actions to find the meaning and understanding of identity. Therefore, this article will bring the perspective back to the "action subject" of the child director,to explore how they seek self-identity under the tension between the external structure and the system-social relationship.Through field research,it has been found that from the macroscopic institutional strength of national policies to the the microscopic strength, like administrative officials, villagers and experts and other trainers,a multi-level identity for child directors has formed. The child directors who are in the "net of identity" often adopt two action strategies of legal identity or resistive identity. The different dimensions of positive and negative, resistance, more or less promoted the child director's identity. This tangled and ambiguous identity is the reflection of the child director on the meaning of identity, responding to the question of "who am I",and further exploring "what should I do" and "what can I do".
