Since its implementation, the “Belt and Road” initiative has been a big platform for Chinese companies to explore foreign markets and increase profits. However, while gaining gains,Chinese companies will also face many unpredictable risks when investing and constructing abroad.Among the many risks, especially the political risk, this risk often involves the political parties in the target country, different parties, even ethnic interests or political interference of major powers,so that foreign investment companies, especially large infrastructure projects, are often stopped suddenly. Its own destiny is also confusing. This article conducted a comparative analysis of cases on this topic, comparing the Colombo Port City project and the Malaysian East Coast Railway project, which are all large-scale overseas infrastructure construction projects, have experienced halts and restarts, suffered setbacks and similar reasons. It has made a detailed analysis of how Chinese companies should pay attention to risks and how to prevent them when going out, especially when investing in small and medium-sized countries with similar complicated political ecology. The first part of the article provides an overview of the Colombo Port City project and the situation of the setback, and analyzes the causes of the Colombo Port City project's setbacks in detail. The second part focuses on the reasons for the Colombo Port City project's setbacks but restarts.Through data analysis and analysis of Sri Lanka's foreign policy transformation after taking office, the necessity of restarting the Port City project was obtained. The third part summarized the situation of the suspension and restart of the Malaysian East Coast Railway project and the project encountered setbacks. The reasons for the frustration and restart were analyzed;the last part obtained the relevant risk prevention experience of investment and construction in similar developing countries by comparing and analyzing the two projects.Provide effective reference for assessing, avoiding risks and realizing expected returns.
