A Study Of ASEAN's "central Position" From The Perspective Of Competition Among Major Powers

ASEAN centrality is gradually formed in the process of ASEAN's development.ASEAN centrality is a multiple definition of structure,function,purpose and process.ASEAN centrality is shaped by its special geographic connection,power relations,and the unique "ASEAN way".This centrality has a great impact on both inside and outside ASEAN.Regardless of the development process of ASEAN,or the regional situation in recent years,the competition among big powers has an important impact on ASEAN.In recent years,the intensification of competition between the major powers,mainly China and the United States,has made ASEAN centrality confronted with multiple predicaments,including the weakening of its centrality momentum caused by power struggle,the contradiction between economic security tie and its own strategic choices faced by member countries,and the prominent drawbacks of the "ASEAN way".Especially in recent years,"South China Sea issue" has emerged again and again,which reflects the competition between China and the United States in the Asia-Pacific region and its impact on ASEAN and its centrality.In addition,based on the analysis of the predicament of the ASEAN centrality,this paper concludes that in order to get out of the predicament,ASEAN needs to adjust the traditional diplomatic thinking mode,strengthen internal solidarity and accelerate the community construction and optimize of the leadership mechanism of ASEAN.
