In the era of economic mutual benefit,cultural integration and information exchange,the importance of oral English is self-evident.Good oral expression ability is good for students to adapt to and promote the development of society.However,under the influence of the traditional exam oriented education,English teaching in China,especially in rural areas,generally focuses on scores rather than ability,which leads to the weakness of students’ oral ability.As we all know,China is a large agricultural country,and the education problem in rural areas has always been an urgent one to be solved.Therefore,it is very important to help rural junior high school students and English teachers understand the current situation of students’ oral English expression ability and its influencing factors,so as to effectively help rural junior high school students improve their oral English expression ability.Through oral test,questionnaire and interview,this study investigated the current situation,existing problems and influencing factors of oral English expression ability of rural junior high school students in Wanzhou District.This study investigated four rural junior high schools in Wanzhou District.Firstly,160 junior high school students were selected by random sampling for oral test.Based on the level 3 requirements of the China’s Standards English,the current situation and problems of oral expression ability of rural junior high school students were investigated from the aspects of phonetic intonation,accuracy,fluency,relevance and expression strategy.Secondly,480 junior high school students were investigated by questionnaire and 15 English teachers were interviewed to explore the influencing factors of students’ oral expression ability.The results show that the oral English ability of rural junior high school students in Wanzhou District has not reached the level 3 required by the China’s Standards English.In this oral test,the students’ five skills are not up to the standard,and they are even worse in phonetic intonation and expression strategy.It’s found that the lack of emotional care and willingness to express,the weak grasp of basic knowledge,and the lack of opportunities for language output areimportant reasons that affect the oral expression ability of rural junior high school students in Wanzhou District.In order to improve the oral expression ability of rural junior high school students,based on the research results,this study attempts to put forward corresponding suggestions from teachers,students and other aspects.As for the English teachers,they should: change the traditional teaching concept and attach importance to the cultivation of students’ oral expression ability;continuously improve their professionalism and be the guide of students’ oral learning;train students’ basic language knowledge and skills to ensure the quality of language input;carry out various oral interaction activities in class to provide a platform for language output;create a relaxed and pleasant classroom atmosphere and take care of students’ psychology and emotion.As for the students,they should strengthen the mastery and application of basic knowledge;strengthen the learning of phonetic intonation and oral expression strategy,also develop good oral learning habits.Other aspects include improving the level of rural teachers,strengthening teacher education and training,creating a good atmosphere for students to learn oral English and providing emotional care for students. |
