The relationship between children's depression and aggressive behavior has been a talking point for researchers. As for the relationship between depression and aggression in children, previous researchers have found that there is a significant correlation. However, few studies have explored the relationship between depression and different aggression subtypes on the basis of distinguishing active aggression from reactive aggression. This study intends to use a longitudinal design to explore the causality between depression and reactive/proactive aggression. In this study, cluster sampling method was adopted. The subjects were students from grade 2 to grade 5 of a primary school in Nankai District,Tianjin. We conducted two data collections at an interval of 6 months.A self-report method was used to measure the level of depression and reactive/proactive aggression in children.Cross-lagged model was used to examine the causality between depression and aggressive behaviors(reactive aggressive and proactive aggressive)in children. The results showed that:(1)children's depression can positively predict reactive aggression;(2)boys5 reactive aggression can positively predict depression;(3)boys' depression can positively predict proactive aggression, while girls' depression cannot significantly predict proactive aggression;(4)children's reactive aggression can predict proactive aggression. The results of this study show that examining the relationship between children's depression and child aggression need to distinguish different types of aggression and differences in children of different genders. This study not only expands and deepens the research on the relationship between depression and aggression, but also discusses the relationship between children's depression and two subtypes of aggression(reactive aggression and proactive aggression),which provides empirical basis and support for the prevention and intervention of depression in children and adolescents.
