Dunhuang frescoes attract the attention of artists at home and abroad with their unique artistic charm, and also provide a new opportunity for the creation of contemporary Chinese painting. In the process of appreciating and learning Dunhuang frescoes, those images whose visible color is superior to all kinds of images, which are difficult to capture and describe, blend with the vicissitudes of life and become an organic whole of frescoes, giving new aesthetic significance. The aesthetic variation caused by peeling(peeling and discoloration)has three characteristics: trace beauty, harmonious beauty and hazy beauty. This aesthetic significance is endowed by the original image system of frescoes, which is consistent with the traditional painting spirit. The wind and sand in the desert, the traces of time, the vicissitudes of history, the hazy and broken frescoes, and the peeling phenomenon of Dunhuang frescoes have brought artists a lot of artistic enlightenment and inspired them to explore new painting languages. This paper studies the aesthetic variation caused by peeling and discoloration of Dunhuang frescoes.Firstly, starting from the history and present situation, through combing and analyzing the existing literature, this paper discusses the causes of peeling and discoloration of frescoes, and discusses the different aesthetic feelings(such as historical feeling, vicissitudes, broken feeling, hazy feeling, etc.)caused by this phenomenon.
