The research object of this paper is the "Bo Gu Tu",which combines rubbings and paintings since the middle of Qing Dynasty.Different from the previous discussions on this kind of images, this paper focuses on the expression of rubbings in this kind of works and the way to watch them. The first chapter of this paper is to sort out the academic tradition and background of rubbings: as a means of recording and copying, rubbings are the product of description of characters and images in epigraphy. In Qing Dynasty, the appearance of holomorphic extension made the three-dimensional image of ancient artifacts present in the form of rubbings, which reflected and further promoted the change of viewing way of rubbings. The second chapter begins to discuss the specific image.Taking Liuzhou's works in the late Qing Dynasty as a representative,on the basis of careful reading of the images and combing the specific creation situation, this paper analyzes the different ways of expression of rubbings and the ways of their functions in the images. In this kind of works, rubbings from the field of epigraphy become the main object to be viewed, and reflect different ways of expression from rubbings in the academic field. The last chapter of this paper is the theoretical discussion of some problems in the image.First of all,the appearance of the "bogutou" which combines rubbings with paintings is to some extent a product of different viewing modes from the past;and in this viewing mode out of visual aesthetics, the characters in rubbings also constitute images.Secondly,as a comprehensive image processing method, the production of "panoramic extension" contains the impact of subjective initiative on the objectivity of rubbings. In the panoramic extension of participating in the creation of "bogutou",this subjective initiative is often more reflected. Finally, the discussion of the problem is based on a phenomenon derived from the creation of "bogutou" : "drawing rubbings" actually reflects the imitation of another kind of image by painting. This kind of imitation touches the more essential problem in art and image creation consciously or unconsciously. In this different way of understanding and shaping, the "cross-border" from academic to art is completed.
