The Establishment Of The Arts And Crafts Department Of Nanjing University Of The Arts (1958-1962)

In order to develop local traditional handicrafts,earn foreign exchange through exports and Support the development of heavy industry,Jiangsu provincial government commissioned Nanjing University of the Arts to set up a professional school of arts and crafts to training professional staff of Arts and crafts in 1958.The establishment of the professional school of arts and crafts was an innovation of Arts and crafts education,It recruited students from commune,countryside and manufacture front-lines of factories of arts and crafts in the province;employed experienced artists to give lessons;arrange courses and practice from a practical point of view;a practicability teaching system that meet the production practice had been established.With the joint efforts of relevant departments and schools,the personnel training achieved it's initial results,a group of qualified personnel of arts and crafts had been sent to the society,contributed to the socialist construction.However,due to the limitation of objective conditions and some mistakes in decision-making,the professional school of arts and crafts had to be suspend in 1962.This paper focusing on the process from establishment to suspension of the professional school of arts and crafts,in order to restore the historical features of the professional school of arts and crafts,analyze its historical background,advantages and disadvantages,and summary its enlightenment to the current design art education based on the analysis above.
