"Running Luo" Image Research

On the basis of a history of one thound years of China,MOHELUO not only shows the extensive and profound creative thoughts of ancients,but also symbolizes the original human demands for human reproduction since ancient times.Track back to the source,in the ancient literatures,MOHELUO is numerous and jumbled.It was once a god named "Mahakala" in Indian Buddhism,a blessing God who helped the poor and gave wealth.To the Song Dynasty,Meng Yuanlao’s "Dream of Tokyo" said: "Moheluo is a small clay doll." "Moheluo" in this sentense is a kind of doll for girls’ cleverness or for children’s play.In this case,the object of study refers to both stereoscopic images and plane images after Song Dynasty with three functions of begging sons,entertainment and decoration.In this dissertation,the study focus on the origin and development of MOHELUO,basing on the perspective of pattern,analysing the shape and meaning of MOHELUO from across different dynasties deeply.Firstly,clarify the development vein of the MOHELUO,Mahakala,the Indian Buddhist God,was introduced into China and integrated with the local custom of praying for sons,becoming MOHELUO,a symbol of offspring reproduction.Thus,MOHELUO developed into the decorative patterns with educational and decorative functions,which are an integral part of the development process of MOHELUO.Secondly,exploring the intrinsic and symbolic meaning of MOHELUO is also necessary,which includes offering sacrifices and begging for cleverness,emphasizing fertility and attaching importance to harmonious,and education through entertainment.The purpose of this research is to extract useful ingredients from limited history literature,receive experience form the designing of ancestors,to inspire and guide the current design practice,in this way to inherit the culture,to create innovation,to design by standing on the shoulders of giants.
