In the 19th century when East-West art communication was not smooth,American scholar Fenollosa(1853-1908)successfully used Japanese art as a link to deep into the oriental cultural circle,and actively promote the western spread of traditional Chinese and Japanese painting.?Epochs of Chinese&Japanese Art?,completed in 1906,made him the first foreigner researcher of the Oriental art.From the perspective of multiculturalism,Fenollosa has formed a view of art history that is different from tradition and has a unique perspective,opened up new ideas for the study of Chinese art history.This article by combing the track of his artistic activities,analyze the reason why his academic research direction changed from western philosophy to Oriental art history.Also combining with Fenorosa's speeches for many years to interpret his works on art theory,and discover innovative methods of art history research.Based on this,explore the differences in thinking between art historians of East and West,and then study the contradictions and similarities between East and West cultures.In the end,it can be concluded that the field of influence of Fenollosa in the modern art world was not limited to Japan,but also affected to China and many western countries.He has made great achievements in academic research,art education,and East-West art communication?This made him not only the founder of the Western East Asian art history research field,but also the precursor of new art concepts in the East.
