In 1960,the “Declaration of War to the Sea” by Guan Shanyue and Li Xiongcai,an instructor-and-student relationship, was considered to be a typical representation as the combination of revolutionary realism and revolutionary romanticism in the field of Chinese painting. In the same year,it became a significant piece of fine art in the exhibition hosted by the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Moreover, the audience was full of praise for this masterpiece in the roving exhibitions in other cities across the country. This article will evolve from the painting “Declaration of War to the Sea” to study the theme of conquering the nature in Chinese painting and collective art creation during that year.Analyzing the historical context before and after the creation of “Declaration of War to the Sea” and reinforcing the knowledge with the literature materials of the art exhibitions and symposiums of the year provides an opportunity to recreate a vivid picture of the artistic creation scene by the instructor and student.Among the construction theme in the 1950 s,similar pieces of Chinese paintings that reflected the concept of “human's determination conquer nature” was gathered to analyze the presentation and evolution of such patterns and compared to the regional cases at the same time to analyze the composition and characteristics of the painting.Utilizing the different aspects of creating and viewing provided an opportunity to analyze the social reality and visual environment at that time, the methods painters used to adjust the visual structure and shape selection during the creation, and collective painting experience in the early 1950 s.As a result, these elements effected Guan and Li's expression methods and allowed them to present a local style and further integrate the painting into political appeals.Analyzing the relationship between the painting and audiences can reveal how visual images can reflect and spread the ideology behind them. The ultimate process is to analyze the creation pattern and its transformation thoroughly and systematically by examining the creation methodology of " Declaration of War to the Sea" and the phenomenon of collective art creation in the same period. This paper serves as an attempt to rearrange the above questions back into its specific historical context and demonstrates a detailed and sophisticated art history.
