Sonny Rollins who has more than sixty years of performing experience is one of the most renowned hard-bop tenor Saxophone masters. He was honored with Grammy Lifelong Achievement Award and recorded studio albums more than a dozen. He has amazing solo thoughts and skills and every note he performed is carefully selected and modified.People find that he always produces unexpected improvisations after they practice his works. What influences me most is the adept usage of alt scales when he performs dominant. After analyzing his works,we can find that his improvisations usually use alt scales when one or two chords fit together.Alt scales create more possibilities in dominant and significantly increased the tension of music. Many domestic jazz musicians often focus on basic scales but ignore the altered tones in dominants and the problems solved by chords. This passage is mainly divided into three parts, including the introduction of alt scale, the memory methods and the analysis of Sonny Rollins,Improvisation scores in order to show the application of alt scale in Jazz.
