The Effect Of Facial Expression Authenticity On Face Recognition And Social Cognition

Faces play an important role in social interaction.On the one hand,individuals can perceive age,gender,race,psychological status of people through the face recognition;on the other hand,through the face social cognition,people can infer the personality of others.Facial expression,as one of the basic features of the face,can affect the results of facial recognition and social cognition.Previous studies have mostly focused on the influence of positive,negative and neutral facial expressions on the facial cognition.However,real and fake facial expressions also contain abundant signal in daily social interactions.Therefore,it is worth exploring how the authenticity of facial expressions affects the face recognition and face social cognition.This study was divided into two sub-studies to investigate the effect of facial expression authenticity on the facial recognition and social cognition.In the first study,the face combination paradigm and eye movement technology were used to investigate the impact of the authenticity of facial expressions on the changing face recognition and processing method.On the basis of the initial study,then,the image perception paradigm and eye movement technology were used to explore the effects of authenticity and polarity of facial expressions on rating the personality of kindness,talent and emotionality.The results of the first study show that(1)under the condition of same top and bottom change,the accuracy of the real condition was significantly lower than that of the fake condition.Under the condition of top change and bottom change,the accuracy of the real condition was significantly higher than those of the fake condition.(2)Under the condition of top change and bottom change,the dwell time of the fake condition was significantly longer than that of the real condition.(3)The combined effect of the faces in the fake condition was significantly larger than that in the real condition.In other words,it was adopted more holistic processing mode in the fake condition.The results of the second study showed that(1)the score of kindness,talent and emotionality of the facial characters in the real expressions condition was higher than those with fake expression condition.Score of kindness and emotionality of positive facial expression condition were higher than negative facial expression condition.The score of kindness in the real positive facial expression condition was significantly higher than those of the fake positive condition.(2)In the process of scoring kindness and talent,the first fixation duration of the real expression was significantly shorter than that of the fake condition;The first fiction duration of the positive condition was significantly shorter than that of the negative condition.In the processof scoring kindness,talent and emotionality,the number of fixations in the real condition were significantly higher than that in fake condition.In the process of scoring kindness and emotionality,the number of fixations in the positive condition were significantly higher than those in the negative condition.(3)In the process of kindness and emotionality judgment,the eye movement patterns of each facial areas were affected by the authenticity and polarity of facial expressions.While in the process of the talent judgment,the cognitive performance of the mouth was affected by the polarity of facial expressions.(4)Through the analysis of the processing gravity of each region of the face,it can be found that eyes,nose,mouth and eyebrows were prominent areas to evaluate kindness.And the eyes,eyebrows,nose and mouth were important areas for evaluating talent.And the eyes,nose,mouth and eyebrows were significant areas for evaluating emotional emotionality.In conclusion,the recognition of changing authenticity of facial expressions affects the recognition of faces,and the recognition of fake expressions under top change and bottom change condition requires more attention resources.Recognition of fake expressions was more holistic.Authenticity of facial expression played an important role in the evaluation of kindness,talent and emotionality,and the polarity of facial expression played an important role in the evaluation of kindness and emotionality.The authenticity of facial expressions showed differences in the eye movement patterns of the entire face and different facial regions in the evaluation of kindness,talent and emotionality.
