Evaluation Of "Huo Yang Monument"

Huoyang Stele was established in the five years of Xuanwu Dijingming(504),and was excavated in Huo Village,Jindong,Shanxi Province.Due to the remote land and the late time,there are veiy few records on the literature.There have been changes in the authenticity of the tablet.Among them,the earliest historical books recorded in Ming Chenghua’s Shanxi Tongzhi,Qing Guangxu’s Shanxi Tongzhi and Yu Xiu’s Linjin County Zhi,especially in Qing Guangxu’s Shanxi Tongzhi,regard Huo Yang’s tablet as a false antique.In addition,Ou Yangfii,a philosopher of Qing Dynasty,criticized Huoyang Stele for its vulgar and worthless font3 especially for its ugly and crude statue.He believed that the stele was forged only because of the shape of the Buddha without looking at the inscription.In the later works of stele inscriptions,such as "Good Book of Stele Inscriptions","Stele Inscriptions" and so on,Ouyang Fu’s theory was followed,and it was considered that"Huoyang Stele" was a forgery.Unlike the predecessors,Zhu Jia,a contemporary calligrapher,holds the opposite view on this monument,believing that it should be placed at the highest position in the Six Dynasties and praised it.Mr.Ma Ziyun,a researcher at the Palace Museum,Mr.Kenichi Shuino,a Japanese scholar,and Mrs.Li Mis a postdoctoral fellow of the National Library Research Institute,all believe that the "Huoyang Monument" is indeed authentic.On the basis of all previous descriptions and expositions of the stele,this paper first takes "Huoyang Stele" as the main line to analyze the style,shape(stele carving)and artistic features of the stele.Thirdly,through the comparison between Huoyang Stele and its famous stele inscriptions and ink marks in the similar period,and the comparison with Shanxi stele inscriptions in the similar region and Yao Boduo Brothers’Statue Inscriptions,the characteristics of calligraphy style at that time were sorted out.After some comparison,the author finds that there are many similarities between Huoyang Stele and many other stele stone.Finally,through the author’s on-the-spot investigation,although the character of "Huoyang Stele”is three inches big,it has cliff momentum and great weather.In addition,through the analysis of the stele engraving worker and the way of publishing,to elaborate its artistic style,to determine that it is a fine work of the Northern Wei Dynasty undoubtedly.The purpose of the author is to investigate the monument from a traditional perspective,to make a comprehensive analysis of the monument,to elaborate its superiority,and hope that more scholars will understand and learn about it.
