A Comparative Study Of Chinese And Thai Verb-object Compound Words

Starting from the actual situation of verb-object structure compound words in Chinese and Thai,this paper gives them scientific definition by referring to many definitions of verb-object structure compound words put forward by predecessors.On this basis,the author summarized and analyzed the distribution of verb-object structure compound words and found that:1.Most of the verb-object structure compound words in Chinese and Thai are verbs,while a few are nouns,adjectives and multi-category words;2.Verb-object structure compound words can also be used as adverbs,while they can t in Thai.Not only that,according to the different types of objects taken by verbal elements,the author finds that there are many similarities and differences between Chinese and Thai verb-object structure compound words:1.The Verb-object verbs in Chinese and Thai are mainly divided into locative,objective,cause,causative,execution and time object;2.The Verb-object verbs in Chinese can also take the object of result,agentive object and purpose object,while in Thai they can't.Different from word-formation,the verb-object verbs in Thai show shows a great consistent in grammatical meaning.That is to say,in the simultaneous translation of verb-object structure compound words in Chinese and Thai,V-N structure verbs are the most common.Many words as object components often have organ attributes,and the verb components used before these objects are usually figurative meanings.On the basis of clarifying the similarities and differences of verb-object structure compound words in between Chinese and Thai,the author selected 44 verb-object structure compound words of the simultaneous transl ation in the 2014 edition of New Thai-Chinese Dictionary(integrated and general edition)compiled by Xiao Shaoyun,and designed a questionnaire covering two types of verb-object compound words:"simultaneous translation"and,converse translation"of Chinese and Thai.There were 108 undergraduates majoring in Chinese at Ubonratchathani University in Thailand translated 30 verb-object compounds,including Chinese-to-Thai and Thai-to-Chinese two patterns.Through the summary,analysis and research of the author,based on the theory of mother language for second language acquisition,the author finds:1.The similarity of Chinese and Thai verb-object compound words easily leads to positive transfer among Thai students;Some Chinese verb-object nouns are difficult for Thai students to understand,which results in the phenomenon of the interference and negative transfer of mother tongue to the students in Thai.Therefore,this paper not only deepens the understanding of the characteristics of Chinese-Thai verb-object compound words,but also speeds up the Chinese and Thai learners in the learning,master and application of Chinese-Thai vocabularies on the breadth and depth,which can also contribute to the improvement of Chinese vocabulary teaching to a certain extent.
