Chinese idioms are vivid and meaningful, which are the essence of Chinese language and the concentrated reflection of profound culture. They have profound historical origins and strong historical accumulation, which are widely used in literary works and are written in a strong sense.Idioms are concise in many forms, but most of them have to be interpreted with real understanding.Every idiom is based on its literal meaning which can generate its specific meaning. The specific meaning is the essence of an idiom, and plays an important role in the rhetorical function. If we use the idioms properly, they can be the "finishing touch",if used incorrectly,it is said to be "an unnecessary move".Idioms are formed with development and change of language. In the process of their formation, idioms must constantly develop themselves to adapt to the progress of society. It shows that on the one hand,we require the relative stability of idioms, but we do not deny its particularity, which makes them be used flexibly in language without being confused. It is not conflicted but can complement each other.By consulting the literature, the writer finds that although there are many previous studies on Uygur translation of idioms, their perspectives are different. In this paper, the writer chooses a new perspective by applying the Relevance Translation Theory to analyze the Uygur translation of idioms. This paper explores how idioms in literary works convey their specific meanings to the target readers through translation. The writer chooses the idioms in Fortress Besieged as the research subject, not only considering the profound influence of this work, but also its representative use of idioms. In this work,Mr.Qian Zhongshu uses idioms vividly and achieves a sarcastic literary effect, and earns a warm response at home and abroad. And the Uygur version also has attracted a large number of readers and gained good reputation in translation field. The writer chooses Relevance Translation Theory as the theoretical basis to explore the translation strategies and methods adopted by the translators in the Uygur version of Fortress Besieged. This paper is mainly divided into four chapters.Chapter One is the introduction, including the reason and significance of the topic, the introduction of related theories and the content and method of this paper. The first part of Chapter Two is an overview of Chinese idioms. This part mainly discusses the definition, classification and characteristics of Chinese idioms. The second part is to describe the practical and flexible use of idioms in Fortress Besieged.Chapter Three is an analysis of the Uygur translation of the idioms in Fortress Besieged under the guidance of Relevance Theory. In this chapter, the first part focuses on the appreciation and analysis of the Uygur version of Fortress Besieged,so as to further understand the concept of "optimal relevance".The second part is to analyze the translation methods and techniques used by translators to achieve the best relevance effect from the perspective of Relevance Translation Theory.Chapter Four is the conclusion, which systematically and comprehensively summarizes the views and conclusions of this paper. In the appendix, the Chinese version and the Uygur version of idioms in Fortress Besieged are listed in contrast.Through collecting and sorting out the idioms in Fortress Besieged, the paper provides a reference for teachers and students who study on such problems in the future. Therefore,it contributes a little to the study of Uygur idiom translation.
