Square dance is a dance art that integrates the culture of the square,a dance and entertainment movement created by the people.Square dance is accepted and loved by the Chinese people because of its unique functional characteristics-selfentertainment,fitness,sociality and mass.Its value of dance function is the product of the continuous development of society and the constant pursuit of individual spiritual life.The "boom" of square dance continues in China.It is not only popular in cities and towns across China,but also affects other countries in the world.And New Zealand as a country with Maori and Pacific culture is one of the countries.This article explores the current situation of Auckland Chinese “square dance” in Auckland-which is the largest city in New Zealand.The motivation stems from the author's curiosity about the state of the square dance being embedded in the new cultural context after crossing the border,and the thinking about whether the importance of the Chinese community in Auckland and its functional value have changed.In addition,although the square dance was brought abroad by Chinese immigrants,there are few studies on its survival and development abroad.This paper mainly uses the literature research method,the anthropological field investigation method and the case study method to select the square dance team in the six Chinese community groups in Auckland as the research object,and systematically investigates the current development of the square dance.Through the analysis of the questionnaires and interview data of participants in the Chinese Square Dance in Auckland,the reasons for the emergence and development of the Chinese community square dance in the Auckland community were summarized.It is related to the Chinese people's personal spiritual life needs,local feelings,spiritual life choices and capacity level limits.Through case study and analysis,this study found that square dance in Auckland as a form of community dance,showing the following characteristics: taking emotion as the main line,taking aesthetic appeal as the guide,taking "participation","enjoyment" and "creation" as the core.Its functional value is presented as: the construction of individual and collective identity,the construction of individual identity,the formation of group belonging in the cultural context of “others”,cultural identity and cultural self-confidence are prominent.
