| Along with the continuous advancement of China’s reform and opening-up,the opening-up of China’s education is also developing in a diversified way.As China’s influence in the world growing rapidly, the enthusiasm and demand of learning Chinese is also growing rapidly. In recent years, the Belt and Road education campaign has been vigorously carried out,and the scale of students coming to China from Muslim countries has been expanding.Since there are great differences between the religious beliefs, customs and habits of Muslim international students and Chinese culture, their cross-cultural adaptation process is different with students from other cultural backgrounds. How to help them adapt faster and better in order to live and study in China has become a growing concern for universities and the government.Based on the background of the Belt and Road Initiative and the rapid growth of the number of Muslim international students, these students are surveyed through questionnaires and interviews and their past education experiences. This paper surveys and analyzes the cross-cultural adaptation of Muslim international students in universities, the problems in the adaptation process, and the factors affecting their adaptation process. The results show that Muslim international students in Chinese universities are adapting the new environment well. The main obstacles affecting their adaptation process are the lack of cross-cultural communicative ability, the lack of social support, and the cultural distance. In terms of individual factors,a person’s duration of studying in China,Chinese level, purpose and expectation of coming to China has a significant impact on the person’s cross-cultural adaptation process.Among these factors,a person’s Chinese level greatly limits the adaptation in living and studying. With the external factors, the cultural conflicts, which arise because of the different values of different religion, and the insufficient social support has the greatest impact on their cross-cultural adaptation process.Based on the theory of cross-cultural adaptation, this paper tries to put forward some strategies to help Muslim international students to improve their cross-cultural adaptability and to integrate into the local culture better. |
