After 1933,a group of Jewish-German historians were persecuted by Nazis and were forced into exile, many of whom were students of Friedrich Meinecke.Hans Rothfels and Hans Rosenberg are two influential historians among Meinecke's students who are in exile in the United States. After World War II,Rothfels returned to Germany in 1951 and officially returned to the German academia.Through a series of reconstruction work on German history and science,he made indelible contributions to the development of German contemporary history.Although Rosenberg did not return to work in Germany,he has often returned to lecture at German universities since 1949.His pioneering research on social history and his critique of German conservative historical traditions have played a decisive role in promoting the rise of the modern German social history school. Both of them profoundly influenced the reconstruction and development of the Federal Republic of Germany's history in different ways after World War II.It is of great academic significance to study their growth, exile process, and their influence on the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. This article will conduct a comparative study of Rothfels and Rosenberg from three aspects: the origins and growth experiences of two historians, the path of historical training and historical research, and the contribution to the reconstruction of German history after the Second World War.Through the comparative study of multiple dimensions, the destiny of exiled historians is displayed. The first chapter of the body text,“Walking into German History”,mainly summarizes the development of Germany and its history in the early 20 th century, and introduces the overview of Meinecke and his students.Secondly,in this context, the birth and growth experiences of Rothfels and Rosenberg were introduced respectively, focusing on their academic training during the Weimar Republic. The second chapter,"The Nazi Persecution and the Exile in the United States," mainly introduces the implementation of the ethnic cleansing policy after that the Nazi regime came into power, and the political persecution as well as involvement of the Jewish students of Meinecke in this context.Under the policy of cleansing,Rothfels and Rosenberg were subjected to the expulsion, exile, and found a foothold in the United States. The third chapter "Return to the German Historiography Circle" mainly introduces the reconstruction of German history science after the Second World War,and the academic exchanges and connections between Rothfels and Rosenberg and the post-war German historians, focusing on their return to the German historiography and their contribution to the reconstruction of German history. The fourth chapter "Summary and Comparison" mainly compares Rothfels and Rosenberg from three aspects, and further discusses their position and contribution in the historians of Germany and the United States.
