Cognitive Research On The Semantics Of "とめる"

Cognitive linguistics has been widely used to explain various linguistic phenomena since it came into being and provided a new perspective for language research.In recent years,a plenty of research achievements of Japanese polyseme from the cognitive perspective has been paid too much attention.The thesis take "tomeru" as the research object,by using the method of corpus-based researches,under the guidance of prototype theory,metaphor theory analyzes the prototype means and semantic extension of "tomeru" and builds the semantic network of "tomeru".This article consists of five parts.Chapter one introduces the research background,the research objectives,prior study of poly seme,the research purpose and the research method of the paper.Chapter two introduces the theoretical on the basis of this paper and includes prototype theory and metaphor theory.Chapter three covers the investigation and conclusion of the paper.Chapter four is the body of the paper,analyzing the meaning of "tomeru" in detailed,confirming the prototype meaning,discussing the derivation mechanism of semantics,constructing he semantic network of "tomeru".Chapter five summarize the main conclusions of this paper and put forward the future research topics.Through the analyze,we draw the conclusions below:First,"tomeru" has thirteen meanings and five different Chinese-hiragana marks.They are「止める」、「停める」、「留める」、「驻める」、「泊める」.The 13means are divided into nine concrete meanings and four abstract meanings.The prototype meaning"tomeru" is "stop the movement of objects".On the basis of the prototype meaning other meanings are extended through metaphorical or metonymy and forming seven local semantic network about "tomeru".These local semantic network jointly form a related semantic network of "tomeru".The semantic extension of "tomeru" is mainly metonymy.Part of extended meaning is extended by prototype meaning through multiple semantics.
