The Development Of The Questionnaire On The Concept Of Stupidity And Its Application To Chinese College Students

Nowadays,endless foolish acts not only affect the social harmony,but also hinder social progress.The essence of foolishness is that individuals make mistakes because they are deficient in morality or intellect.Intensive study of individual's view of foolishness is beneficial to his/her growth and the benign development of society.It is essential to develop an effective scale with good reliability and validity for the further study of foolishness.In this paper,the semantic analysis method and the text analysis method were used to comb and define the meaning of foolishness.Following the general standard procedure of scaling,this study developed the Foolishness View Scale(FVS)and used it to investigate the college student's view on foolishness.Two parts are included in this paper:develop a Foolishness View Scale,and research on the present situation of college students' view on foolishness.The first part developed a Foolishness View Scale.First,the structure of the scale was established on the basis of the foolishness theory of lacking intelligence or morality.Then,items were collected by modifying the maturity scales,open questionnaire,and self-compiled items.Third,all the collected items were screened and modified by the experts.An initial 44-item scale for analyzing the issue of "the View on Foolishness" was developed.Finally,a formal scale was formed after three rounds of test and revision.The second part analyzed the present situation of college students' view on foolishness.The FVS,developed in the first part,was used to research 1076 students' view on foolishness.The conclusions are as follow:(1)As a valid,reliable scale,the FVS including 3 factors and 44 items can be used to measure the Chinese people's view on foolishness.(2)Nearly half of college students agree that the lack of moral or ability is stupid behavior or idea,that is,they agree with the foolishness theory of lacking intelligence or morality.There has a significant negative correlation between students' view on foolishness and their age.To be specific,the degree of identify with the foolishness theory of lack intelligence or morality maybe decline with age.A significant gender difference exists in the identification of different types of stupidity of college students.Boys are more agree that "lack intelligence" is stupid while girls are more agree that "lack morality" and "both lack intelligence and morality" is stupid.However,there are no differences between college students from different professions and districts,all of them hold same attitudes toward foolishness.(3)The foolishness theory of lack intelligence or morality is confirmed,and includes two core components,"lack intelligence" and "lack morality"."Lack intelligence","lack morality" and"both lack of morality and intelligence" are all foolish.
