A Study Of The Words Of The Same Family In The Rhyme Section Of Yangsheng In "Shuowentongxundingsheng"

Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng(《説文通训定声》)is a sound-based dictionary written by Zhu Junsheng(朱骏声)in the Qing Dynasty.The structure of sound and meaning reflects the innovation of its arrangement and academic viewpoints.There have been many studies on the book in the academic circle,but there are few works focused on its cognate words.It is an important material for the study of Chinese cognate words,and it deserves to be further researched systematically.The study of cognate words in Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng(《説文通训定声》)’ nasal-ending rhyme not only can provide a basis for the re-positioning of this book in the history of etymology,but also provide clues for linkage of the cognate words.Due to limited time and the length,this paper only take cognate words in nasal-ending rhyme of Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng(《説文通训定声》)as the study object.According to the arrangement and interpretation style of the book,we combined 116 groups of cognate words in nasal-ending rhyme of Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng(《説文通训定声》)by obeying the stringent limits of consonant and rhyme,including 40 groups in-m tail consonants,34 groups in-n tail consonants,and 42 groups in-tail consonants.Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng(《説文通训定声》)used a large number of explain words such like yi mou wei zhi(以某爲之),yu mou lue tong(与某略同),yi zuo(亦作),yi sheng(亦声),jia jie(假借)and so on,and its arrangement structure revealed phonetic sign which were related with meaning.The main cognate word is linked by the yi sheng(亦声)and the phonetic sign.The study result of the Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng(《説文通训定声》)shows that the main phonetic type of Chinese cognate words is sound-shift which is mainly composed of pangniu(旁纽)on the condition of dieyun(叠韵).It reflects the phonetic relationship between the consonant and rhyme of cognate words.In terms of meaning,we take the etymological meanings as a major clue.From the view of studying cognate words in comprehensive and systematic way,Shuowen Tongxun Disheng(《説文通训定声》)still has some shortcomings,such as the arbitrariness using of the term,scattered explaining etc..Although the book has already appeared the germination of modern linguistic theory to some extent,it has not yet formed a systematic etymological book.In the future,there are more cognate words will be found out by the arrangement and interpretation style of the Shuowen Tongxun Dingsheng(《説文通训定声》),such as the phonetic sign,yi sheng(亦声)and yi mou wei zhi(以某爲之).It will be conducted in order to provide materials for Chinese cognate characters dictionary.
