Joseph Conrad is a writer who has strong awareness of space. His spatial writing is not only a simple description, but also a reflection on the society and the mental state of human beings.Based on the perspective of spatial analysis, this thesis deals with Heart of Darkness?Lord Jim?The Secret Agent?Under Western Eyes. This thesis tries to find the connotations of spatial writing in Conrad's fiction and deeply interprets the mental state of people and the significance of spatial writing. This thesis is divided into six parts. The first part is the introduction including the background and significance of the topic, domestic and foreign research review, thesis research ideas and framework structure. The second part is the study of geographical landscapes, which analyzes the connection between the geographical landscapes and Conrad's life experience,it is concluded that migration is the key to Conrad's life experience. The ever-changing spatial experience has made Conrad feel never arrived. The third part studies social space.Based on Henri Lefebvre and Michel Foucault's space theory, this part explores the political and the economic factors behind the writing of Conrad's colonial space and urban space. The fourth part of psychological space focuses on the characters' ego.The inner ego implies the closed, lonely, split and other psychological states of itself. The external ego presents the alienation between itself and the external world. In the fifth part, after summing up Conrad's space epistemology with the characteristics of impressionism, the author points out Conrad's modernity presage and spiritual orientation. The sixth part is reflection and summary. The author sums up the significance of the perspective of using spatial research, and the value of studying Conrad's fiction from the perspective of space.
