William Faulkner(1897 – 1962),as one of the greatest writers of the 20 th century,His classic work "The Sound and the Fury" is even more famous in the world.In the past,scholars focused their attention on feminism,ecological ethics,and racism to study their works and achieved a lot of results.Western theological theories also provide new perspectives for us to study their works.This article selects the basic concept of "original sin" in Christian culture.It focuses on "The Sound and the Fury" and discusses other fictions.It explores Faulkner's original guilt consciousness in the text from different angles,and has a strong humanistic ideology behind it.And the unique concept of redemption.This thesis conducts the discussion on three layers.All are stated as follows:In layer one,introduced the concept of original sin and its important position in Christian culture from the Bible,and generally discussed Faulkner's religious background and the concept of original sin embodied in his novel.In layer two,Using the method of textual close reading,combining Augustine's original sin and Calvin's definition of original sin,taking the novel "The Sound and the Fury" as the main focus,and discussing Faulkner from three different levels: personal guilt,family guilt,and social guilt.The original sin consciousness.In layer three,Analyze Faulkner's multi-level concept of salvation.Analysis of the textual salvation represented by the setting of Benjy's character image;analysis of the parallel pattern of the novel and the biblical framework reveals the deep salvation awareness of Faulkner's attempts to find hope and a way out for modern people who are lost.In conclusion,Faulkner's original sin consciousness and concept of salvation reflected in the text illuminate people's living conditions.Deeper hopes are hidden behind the insight and introspection of “sin”.
