| The philology work The Construction of Chinese Characters,written by Modern scholar Dai Jun-ren,was exclusively concerned with the traditional "liu shu".This book pointed out that definitions and types in traditional "liu shu" is problematic.So Dai Jun-ren believed that once we knew the old system as inaccurate and misleading property descriptions,a new system for more comprehensive construction of Chinese Characters should be put forward.Thus Dai Jun-ren proposed his new system initiative to try to solve these problems.The new four categories for constructing words by Dai Jun-ren was defined as following:"Xing Biao Fa","Yi Biao Fa","Xing Yi Jianbiao Fa"and "Qu Yin Fa".Under these four entries,more detailed categories has been proposed:Shixiang Xing Biao Fa,Bianxiang Xingbiao Fa,Xuxiang Xingbiao Fa,Jiexiang Xingbiao Fa,Fuhao Zhibiao Fa,Hexiang Xingbiao Fa,Chongxiang Xingbiao Fa,Heti Yibiao Fa,Chongti Yibiao Fa,Bianti Yibiao Fa,Xing Yi Jianbiao Fa,Sheng Yi Jianbiao Fa,Sheng Xing Jianbiao Fa,Jiedai Fa.Each category had its precise definition,and some of them also had brief introductions of relationships between the category and "liu shu".Under each category,Dai Jun-ren explained "xiao zhuan" in "Shuo Wen Jie Zi" by using oracles and inscriptions on ancient bronze objects as new materials.Following "Qu Yin Fa" part,the book covered in more detail in "zhuan zhu" with Zhuan Zhu Shuo.Dai gained a reputation for his original ideas,and he was one of the most influential innovator of new "liu shu" theory in Republican period.This dissertation takes Dai’ Jun-ren’s work The Construction of Chinese Characters as research object and deals with it in four chapters:Chapter Ⅰ is an introduction on the topic,including the selection origin,the previous studies and the research purpose,significance and methodology of the dissertation.Chapter Ⅱ introduces Dai Jun-ren and his work The Construction of Chinese Characters in three sectors.The first sector describes Dai Jun-ren’s life-story,family,his works and his wide circle of friends and acquaintances.The second sector introduces the reason why he wrote this book.And the third sector gives an instruction on organization and style of the book.Chapter Ⅲ extensively observes and studies the contents of The Construction ofChinese Characters,and more precise definitions of characters construction had been given by Dai Jun-ren.The relationship between "liu shu" and Dai Jun-ren’s new four types(as we mentioned above)had been interpreted logically into four sectors.And all these four types fourteen categories had its basic conception and typical examples.We could also have a fair idea of Dai Jun-ren’s system by opposing his views against traditional "liushu" according to his book preface.Chapter Ⅳ summarizes the achievements and shortcomings of The Construction of Chinese Characters.Based on Chinese pictophonetic characters(word-shape,sound and meaning as its essential ingredients),Dai Jun-ren proposed his new system against traditional "liu shu".His work have enriched traditional "liu shu" theory.However,there are also many deficiencies.When explaining example words,Dai Jn-ren developed improper explanations due to his own limitations.Besides,Dai Jun-ren over-categorized his system.Or,to put it another way,too much detail would be likely to face more practical difficulties. |
