French writer,Victor Segalen, came to China three times around the beginning of the 20 th century and spent a third of his life in China. As a poet, sinologist and archaeologist,he was familiar with Chinese, and he read a lot of documents during his travels and archaeological work in China. He completed many books about China. With the help of these books,Segalen constructed his own “imaginary kingdom”.The discussion of the relationship between “reality” and “imagination” also ran through his life's creation. In fact, between “reality” and “imagination”,Segalen found another existence, namely “vision”.“Vision” seems to find a harmonious integration point for the game between “reality” and “imagination”,which is highly praised by Victor Segalen.Based on Segalen's literary works and letters in China, this thesis discusses the formation and evolution of his “vision”.The main part of this thesis is divided into four chapters, except the introduction and the conclusion. The introduction focuses on Segalen's relationship with China, emphasizes on the research status of Segalen at home and abroad, and puts forward the significance of this research. The first chapter mainly explains the scope of the research, discusses the translation of the word “vision” and the relationship between “vision” and “the vision of China” in Segalen's books. The second chapter mainly discusses the formation and evolution of “vision” through close reading of his travel notes and his books. The essence of “vision” is the product of Segalen's thinking about the relationship between “reality” and “imagination” under the influence of Chinese culture. This thinking process runs through the whole trip to China and reflects his change of thought. Therefore,in the third chapter,we will choose three representative works about China, the poetry anthology Stčles, the novel René Leys and the prose collection Peintures to discuss the embodiment of “vision” in Segalen's works, and analyze the formation and evolution of “vision” according to the changes of the relationship between “reality” and “imagination” in the works. The last chapter discusses the ideological origin of “vision” and its poetics and aesthetic significance. It discusses the ideological origin of the concept of “vision” according to the ideological changes of Victor Segalen's life, analyzes the influence of Chinese culture, especially Taoism,on his thoughts and reveals the essence of “vision”.The last part summarizes the main points of view of the thesis and puts forward the future prospect for the study of Segalen's “vision”.
