This study focuses on anti-penetration performance of pre-stressed ceramic impacted by long rod projectile.Theoretical analysis,numerical simulations and experimental research have been carried out in this paper.A brief theoretical model for the process of applying pre-press on ceramic has been proposed to calculate the pre-stress distribution in ceramic.A numerical model for long rod projectile(LRP)in different velocities penetrating ceramic with different pre-press values has been established to investigate anti-penetration performance of pre-stressed ceramic.A experiment of long rod penetrating pre-stress ceramic has been investigated based on the theoretical model and numerical simulations,obtaining the anti-penetration performance of pre-stress ceramic as well as verifying the reliability of this simulation model.The main contents of this paper are as follows:(1)Theoretical model on stress distribution of pre-stressed ceramicBased on elastic mechanics and Hertz contact theory,a theoretical analysis is carried out in order to figure out stress changes in ceramic during loading process of pre-stress and anti-penetration process.The model is applied to calculate the internal pre-stress of ceramic.Meanwhile,it provides basis of theoretical analysis for subsequent numerical simulation.(2)Simulation study on the process applying pre-press on ceramicThe processes of applying pre-press on ceramic are studied by using finite element software AUTODYN with Johnson-Cook constitutive model for metal and Johnson-Holmquit-2 constitutive model for ceramic material.The internal stress value of the ceramics is obtained through defining the compression ratio ? to describe the loading degree of pre-stress.(3)Numerical simulation of ballistic performance of pre-stress ceramicNumerical simulation of long rod project penetrating pre-stress ceramic has been conducted to describe anti-penetration performance of pre-stressed ceramic.The change state of internal stress in the process of penetration is studied.Simultaneously,the relationship between the remaining depth of penetration,the pre-stress value and the velocity of projectile is given to figure out anti-penetration performance of pre-stress ceramic.(4)Experimental study on LRP penetrating pre-stress ceramicThe experimental research on applying pre-press on ceramic and the penetration of pre-stress ceramic by LRP were carried out.The reliability of the numerical simulation model used in this paper and further analysis of anti-penetration performance of pre-stress ceramic are presented by comparison of the experimental results and simulation results.
