While enjoying the times bonus brought by the Internet technology, people are also facing security threats caused by ubiquitous cyber-attacks and privacy leaks. Therefore, more and more attention was paid to privacy protection. In this context, anonymous communication technology was proposed and quickly developed.Freenet is an anonymous peer to peer network, which mainly provides distributed file storage and retrieval services, with nearly 20 years of research and development history. This article mainly studies the anonymity principle of Freenet, and uses a series of research methods to analyze and evaluate the performance of Freenet's communication anti-traceability.The main research contents are:(1)By reading and analyzing the relevant literature and program source code of Freenet to understand the operation mechanism and anonymity principle of Freenet and the evaluation method of anti-tracing performance of communication,as well as proposed an anonymous communication mechanism based on file sharing;(2)A code simulation network is constructed using the method of program simulation, and the visualization process of the code simulation network can intuitively help people to understand the routing process and anonymity principle of Freenet;(3)Using the Docker container-based virtualization technology to build a private Freenet experimental simulation network, the experimental network can fully simulate the real Freenet, and is highly customizable, not only can be used to study Freenet's anti-traceability performance, but also can be used for studying the communication performance of Freenet, which provides great convenience for studying complex anonymous networks;(4)Using traffic visualization technology, code simulation network and container simulation network to study the communication anti-traceability performance of Freenet under active and passive traffic analysis attacks to estimate the anonymity of Freenet network in different threat models comprehensively.Research results show that Freenet can well resist the traffic watermarking attack in active traffic analysis.Opennet mode can be compromised by passive traffic analysis, especially eavesdropping attacks from malicious neighbor nodes.Since Darknet mode node only works with trusted nodes running by friends, they are more secure in the face of passive traffic analysis and eavesdropping attacks.Freenet's communication delay is quite high but it has strong anonymity under the premise of correct configuration and use.It can provide reasonable privacy protection for publishers and searchers.Darknet mode has higher security than Opennet mode, but it is relatively difficult to promote and has not yet formed a sufficient scale. The Freenet project team currently recommends the use of a mixed mode of simultaneous opening of the Opennet mode and the Darknet mode. This mode takes into account both the convenience of connection and the security of communication, which is a good transition. In general,Freenet is an excellent anonymous communication system.
