Ellipsis is one of the key strategies of processing language in simultaneous interpretation. The process of TV sign language interpretation involves synchronous conversion between Chinese and natural sign language.Ellipsis has a crucial influence on the interpretation effect. The existing researches are limited to simultaneous interpretation between spoken languages. There is no research on the usage of ellipsis in interpretation of sign language in TV programs. In addition, there are differences in identification and culture, between deaf interpreters and hearing ones in TV programs, which is unclear whether it would affect the use of ellipsis in the process of interpretation strategy or not. Therefore,on the basis of researching deaf interpreters and hearing interpreters in Xiaorui News Talk and Focus On,this thesis describes and analyzes the two kinds of interpreters' use of ellipsis in the process of interpretation.Research data show that there are six kinds of word ellipses in both interpreters' interpretation, which are the ellipses of adjective, quantifier, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and auxiliary word omission. At the same time, there are also four kinds of ellipses in sentence expressions, which are the ellipsis expressions of declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, imperative sentence and exclamatory sentence.According to these analysys which are based on the deaf interpreters' strategies used to omitte, these ellipsis expressions can be classified as:(1)words and sentences are omitted because of existing of the differences between sign language and Chinese.(2)ellipses caused by media use for matching television pictures and ellipses based on the understanding of information. From the perspective of language itself and the media environment,a variety of ellipses in the TV sign language news program is analyzed in this thesis. This study compares the omission phenomenon of the interpreting between the interpreter of deaf and hearing people. What they have in common is: quantifier and conjunction are more likely to be omitted, and auxiliary and adverb which is used to show location are completely omitted, either of these interpreters consciously use classifier handshapes or key signs to omitte what ought to be interpreter. The difference is deaf interpreters can use classifer handshapes and non-manual signa more skillfully and fluently. In addition, this study finds that there are some differences between active ellipsis and passive ellipsis. The former refers to that sign language interpreters consciously omit the news manuscript content so as to improve the efficiency of the information transmission. The later occurs when interpreters cannot keep pace with the reporter,or there are too much news information needed to be handled,or there are some terminologies cannot be interpreted directly.
