Mixer is the key component of almost all RF microwave receivers and signal generators.Mixer is an indispensable part of radio frequency microwave millimeter wave system. It plays an important role in radar, communication, satellite, remote sensing, measurement, electronic countermeasures and other fields.Mixer is developing towards high performance, low cost, high integration and broadband, which provides the basis for further system integration and miniaturization. In this paper, the basic theory and classification of mixers, the working principle of passive double-balanced mixers and the basic characteristics of balanced unbalanced circuits are introduced. The main performance parameters and optimization methods of planar spiral balun are analyzed.A broadband(8.5GHz to 16GHz)passive doublebalanced mixer and an ultra-wideband(9GHz to 20GHz)passive double-balanced mixer are realized by WIN GaAs PP25-2X process. The mixer and the sample of broadband mixer are tested. The operating frequencies of the broadband passive dual-balanced mixer are 8.5 GHz to 16 GHz.The frequency conversion loss is less than 10 dB(7.8 dB at 11.2 GHz),the frequency isolation of the local oscillator is greater than 30 dB(59 dB at 12.5 GHz),the frequency isolation of the local oscillator is greater than 23 dB(45.5 dB at 13.5 GHz),and the frequency isolation of the intermediate oscillator is greater than 17 dB(25.5 dB at 13.5 GHz).The input compression point of 1dB is greater than 10 dBm,and the intermediate frequency bandwidth reaches 4 GHz.The experimental results are basically in agreement with the simulation results and achieve the desired goals. It has certain application value.UWB passive dual-balanced mixer operates at 9 GHz to 20 GHz with frequency conversion loss less than 10 dB,frequency conversion loss at 12.4 GHz is 8.6 dB,local to radio frequency isolation greater than 31 dB(49.2 dB at 9.9 GHz),local to intermediate frequency isolation greater than 23.4 dB(50 dB at 14 GHz),radio to intermediate frequency isolation greater than 12.6 dB(38.9 dB at 19.2 GHz)and input compression point greater than 11 dBm.The bandwidth of IF reaches 6 GHz,which achieves the expected goal and has high application value.
