In the 21st century,the media's governance effect on corporate earnings management began to be conceemed by the people of the country,but scholars have seen differences in the study of effects.Some scholars believe that the media has achieved the effect of curbing the company's earnings management through supervision;the other scholars hold the opposite view.This paper takes China's SSE and Shenzhen Stock Exchange A-share listed companies in 2015-2017 as the research object,and empirically studies the relationship between media attention and the degree of corporate earnings management by proposing two sets of competitive hypotheses.Different from the text tendency perspective or media nature perspective adopted by the predecessors,this paper selects the news headline editing method that is closer to the news practice as the entry point.The results of the study support the market pressure effeet,which indieates that at the current stage in China,the higher the intensity of media attention,the more rhetorical methods used to edit the news headlines,the more the company can bring market pressure,so that it can match the market expectations.Multi-level earnings management.After further researching the differences between different rhetorical news headlines,this paper finds that the rhetorical news headlines and exaggerated admiration of the rhetorical news headlines have a significant impact on the company's earnings management,while the metaphor of the anthropomorphic news headlines is not obvious enough.Among them,the exaggerated praise of the rhetorical news headline has the most obvious effect.This article does not rule out that there is some kind of "tacit cooperation" between the media and the company,which should cause concern.This paper enriches the relevant research on the relationship between media attention and corporate governance,and has practical reference value for the behavior of listed companies and the media in the capital market.It should be noted that the research results of this paper do not negate the role of the media as an external govermance mechanism,but hope that through research,better discover and understand the problems,so that the governance role of the media can be better played in the field of earnings management.
