Temporal Talbot phenomena, also called as temporal self-imaging effect, are the time-domain counterpart of the well-known spatial Talbot phenomena, which occurs when a periodic temporal signal propagates through a dispersive medium with first-order dispersion conditions. The effect has attracted great interest because it has unique advantages in multiplying the repetition rate of an arbitrary periodic pulse train without distorting the individual pulse features and essentially without loss of energy. At present, the temporal Talbot effect has been widely applied to the fields of time-domain compression or stretching of short pulses,time-domain reversal of waveforms,all-optical clock recovery, temporal cloaking, noiseless intensity amplification of repetitive signals and so forth. In this paper, the research situation and basic principles of the temporal Talbot effect are introduced at first. Then the temporal Talbot effect and its related applications are studied in detail. The modulation fading phenomenon in the temporal Talbot system is found and proposed, the reason of which is theoretically analyzed. Finally, the potential applications of modulation fading effect are also discussed. The main research contents and major academic contributions of this thesis are as follows:1.The modulation fading phenomenon in the temporal integer Talbot system is found and proposed. Moreover, the phenomenon is explained from both theoretical and simulation aspects. The analysis model is given as well. The essential reasons for the modulation fading phenomenon are elaborated and the correctness of the theoretical analysis results is verified by numerical simulation.2.The temporal fractional Talbot effect for the modulated pulse train is analyzed. The amplitude evolution process of modulated pulse trains in the temporal fractional Talbot system is illuminated in detail. In addition,a closed-form analytical expression of the system transfer function is derived under certain conditions and proved by simulations.3.A new scheme of temporal cloaking based on modulation fading effect is preliminarily designed and the amplitude noise fluctuation mitigation effect in temporal Talbot effect is explained by theory and simulation from a new perspective.According to the proposed scheme of temporal cloaking, the simulation results are given and discussed. The amplitude noise fluctuation suppression phenomenon in the temporal Talbot system is reinterpreted by utilizing the obtained system transfer function.
