For being in short of frequency band and reliable security in telecommunication, people start to find a new way of communication.Wireless optical communication has a very wide spectral resource.Because of its very small transmission angle,it has very good communication privacy. The advantages of wireless optical communications make people focus on this field. There is a new forward error correction code named Polar code. The new code has the advantage that the Shannon capacity can be achieved in a binary symmetric channel with very low encoding and decoding complexity.Though people had made great progress on polar code, most of the research are concentrated on the AWGN channel. In order to expand its application scope,we attempts to apply the polar code to the channel model in wireless optical communication with gamma-gamma distribution in this paper. The target of this paper is to apply polar codes to wireless optical communications and analyze their performance. The main workload I finished in this paper is fixed up as follows:(1)Establish the abstract model of wireless optical communication(2)The usual modulation and demodulation methods are introduced in the paper. And a soft information extraction is proposed to deduce the complexity of PPM modulation. The Monte Carlo construction algorithm are introduced in detail,so is the SCL decoding algorithm.(3)The simulation of the turbulence channel which is obeying the gamma-gamma distribution is completed by software. The simulation results in the paper show that polar code cannot applied to the communication system, except for some situations that when bit error rate is between 10-4 and10-5.On that condition, polar codes is better than the LDPC code. And polar code may be a good candidate for wireless optical communication channel. In the simulation process,I did not consider the use of compensating techniques for light intensity fading. At the same time, the construction and decoding algorithm we use are outof-date.If you want to further improve the performance of polar code in wireless optical communication, you can consider improving aspects above.
