In the process of image acquisition, the quality of the image is seriously degraded due to the influence of hardware configuration, lighting conditions, weather conditions, and other factors.Nighttime color images generally have low brightness and contrast,a large amount of hidden details and color informations. The clear image is the critial prerequisites for understanding real scene.Nighttime color image enhancement has broad research prospects in areas such as public social security and urban traffic law enforcement. For nighttime color images,it is necessary to enhance the brightness, contrast, detail information, and color information through image enhancement algorithms to satisfy the further analysis and processing of the computer vision system. In this paper,we propose a study of nighttime color image enhancement based on Retinex for nighttime color images with local light sources or a large number of dark connected regions. In this paper,we first convert the input RGB image into an image represented by the HSI color model, and obtain the I component of the image in the HSI space. And then,we adaptively adjust the I component to enhance the overall brightness of the image, suppress the "halo" phenomenon that may be caused by the local highlight areas, and compress the dynamic range.Afterwards, for the local detail enhancement of nighttime color images,we introduce the retina-receptive field tri-gaussian model into the illuminance image estimation of the MSR algorithm. This method can effectively maintain the brightness and contrast of the image while maintaining the details of the edge of the image. Finally, the image is converted to RGB space and its color is restored so that the color information of the enhanced image is maintained.
