In order to handle the explosive growth of wireless communication data, with the increase of wireless transmission rate of user terminals, how to deploy the wireless backhaul network to improve the backhaul network capacity has become the key to improving the network performance. At the same time, new multimedia services represented by augmented reality(AR)and virtual reality(VR)are emerging, which brings new challenges to the design of the network architecture for the 5th Generation(5G)network.First of all, considering that small cells will be deployed in large numbers in urban areas to form ultra-dense cellular networks in the future 5G networks,a distributed architecture of wireless backhaul networks is proposed to analyze the backhaul network capacity and energy efficiency. Also,a minimum average hop algorithm is proposed to improve the network capacity. The impact of the number of backhaul gateways and the density of small cell base stations on the performance of the wireless backhaul network is investigated, which lays the foundation for the study of wireless backhaul network scenario based on AR/VR.Then,based on the requirements of AR/VR applications, this paper proposes a future 5G network architecture and relevant network model based on Software Defined Network(SDN).In order to reduce the network delay of AR/VR data,a multi-path cooperative transmission strategy is proposed and related theories are derived, which is innovative. The upper and lower bounds of the backhaul delay are obtained.Based on the system model, the optimization problem of the effective service energy consumption is proposed. The solution to the problem is obtained through the two-step solution and related algorithms. The numerical simulation proves that the multi-path cooperative transmission strategy is superior to the traditional single-path transmission strategy in terms of the network delay and the effective service energy consumption. Finally, this paper further considers the scenarios in which multiple users request AR/VR data at the same time, and only focuses on the part of wireless backhaul. The expressions of some performances, such as reception delay, network throughput, and network energy efficiency are derived and the performances are analyzed by the numerical simulation. The simulation results indicate that multi-path cooperative transmission strategy outperforms single-hop sub-6GHz transmission strategy in terms of network throughput. Also, the simulation results show that the gain of multi-path cooperative transmission strategy over single-hop sub-6GHz transmission strategy in terms of network throughput increases significantly with the increase of the density of edge data centers.
