Ultra-wideband(UWB)systems have attracted extensive attention in the field of the wireless communications due to their high data rate, low power consumption and good spectrum sharing characteristics.Non-coherent(NC)UWB systems are more popular compared to the coherent UWB systems because of their implementation complexity.Energy detection(ED)receiver and autocorrelation receiver(AcR)are two typical non-coherent detection schemes.Generally, the ED is combined with pulse position modulation(PPM).The ACR is used in conjunction with transmitted reference(TR)signaling. In order to improve the transmission reliability of non-coherent UWB communication systems for different applications, this thesis focuses on the channel coding techniques for TR-UWB and NC-PPM systems, and for particularly the transmitted reference pulse cluster(TRPC-)UWB system(referred to as an improved TR-UWB system). The major contributions can be summarized as follows.Polar codes are introduced to non-coherent UWB communication systems and the Gaussian approximation method is used to construct the polar code. The Gaussian approximation method is used to find the appropriate information set.Correspondingly, the successive cancellation(SC)decoding algorithm and the successive cancellation list(SCL)decoding algorithm are employed respectively.Taking into account the characteristics of non-coherent UWB systems that do not need channel estimation, training sequence is used to estimate the noise variance.Performance evaluation is performed in the TRPC-UWB,TR-UWB and NC-PPM systems under the IEEE 802.15.4a channel models.Cyclic redundancy check(CRC)and polar code concatenated(CRC-SCL)coding scheme is introduced to the TRPC-UWB communication system. The effect of different CRC codes on the performance of CRC-SCL coded TRPC-UWB system is evaluated and the comparisons between CRC-SCL and other existing coding schemes are provided. The results show that comprehensive evaluation should be considered in both the bit error rate(BER)performance and complexity, and suitable forward error correction(FEC)codes can be used according to different requirements of applications.
