Existing reliability models are widely applied to evaluate the lifetime of storage systems.Because the parallel storage systems energy-wasting issue caused by redundant data,lots of energy saving technology of parallel storage system have emerged.Unlike previous work,we consider the relationship between system reliability and energy saving technology,develop a reliability model for parallel storage systems equipped with energy-saving techniques.Since parallel storage systems are widely applied and popularization of energy saving technology of parallel storage system,the reliability model has a huge market with big potential and wide prospectThis paper first model the behaviors of parallel storage system coupled with power management optimization policies.Then make use of data access patterns as input parameters to estimate each disk's utilization and power-state transitions.Then,derive each disk's reliability in terms of annual failure rate from the disk's utilization,age,operating temperature,and power-state transition frequency.Next,calculate the reliability of energy-efficient parallel file systems in accordance with the annual failure rate of each disk in the systems.Finally,use real-world trace to validate out the reliability model.The reliability model for parallel storage systems equipped with energy-saving techniques strengths are as fellow:Considered the effect of energy saving technology on parallel storage system;be able to quantify impacts of energy-conservation schemes on the utilization and power state transitions of disks;and capable of predicting the annual failure rate of disk arrays as a function of disk utilization,power-state transitions,and ambient temperatures.The paper's main contributions are as fellow:Propose a systematic approach to analyzing the reliability of energy-efficient parallel storage systems;analyze and derive the failure rate of systems from I/O workload;we validate the accuracy of the reliability model using the DiskSim simulator;and using real data traces,show that the reliability model of energy-efficient parallel file systems offers an analysis of the tradeoff between reliability and energy-efficiency in the context of energy-efficient parallel file systems.
