A Study On Alienated University Research Function From The Perspective Of Academic Capitalism

With the advent of the knowledge economy and economic globalization,the competition of hard power among countries is becoming ever more fierce.Among them,the competition of national strength represented by science and technology advancement has become the foremost battlefield.Under such circumstances,building strong capability in scientific research has become an inevitably subject for national development.As one of the important organizations of scientific research,universities not only takes the important responsibility of carrying out scientific research,but also shoulder the task of producing talent in the scientific research fields.Since the 20 th century,with economic globalization and knowledge marketization sweeping across the world,a new model of knowledge production--academic capitalism has brought the ideas of marketization and enterprization into university campuses.As a result,scientific research functions of universities have quietly changed in the following four aspects: scientific research concepts,scientific research systems,organization and management of scientific research,and the relationship among members of the university community.The healthy development of scientific research function is related to the construction of “Double First-Class university” project and the comprehensive strength of the country.Therefore,it is particularly important to analyze the current situation and impact of scientific research in the context of academic capitalism and find solutions to address academic capitalism.This thesis first adopted the literature research method to define the concept and manifestation forms of academic capitalism and introduced related theories.Based on this and in combination with questionnaires and interviews,this thesis then analyzed the current situation of scientific research in China's universities under the background of academic capitalism,including the alienation and reconstruction of scientific research concepts,the profit-oriented development of scientific research system,the increasingly professional organization and administrative management of scientific research,and the relationship among members of university communities.Then,based on the triple helix theory and resource dependence theory and in combination with in-deep interviews,this paper identified the driving forces behind the changes of scientific research functions of universities,which are from external political and economic environment and from the internal development logic of the universities themselves.In the end,based on the actual situation in China,this thesisput forward ought choice for universities to deal with academic capitalism.
