The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of Music Reading of the eighth grade students in Shanghai.The influences of gender,after school music learning experiences were also analyzed.The method of survey was adopted.A stratified cluster random sampling method was applied to select the subjects,who contained 337 eighth-grade students from 10 middle schools fromthree districts in Shanghai.The research instrument as "Music Reading Proficiency Testfor Shanghai Eighth Grade Students" was applied to collect the data.Expert validity and item analysis were examined.The reliability was 0.655.Descriptive statistics,t-test,and two-way ANOVA were applied to analyze the data.The results were as follows:1.For the eighth grade students in Shanghai,the proficiency test score of the music notation reading was better than that of the numbered musical notation reading.The reading music in rhythm was slightly weaker than that in melody.The cognition of rhythm spectrum is better than that of melody spectrum with the aid of sound.2.In terms of gender,the overall performance of girls in music reading is better than that of boys.3.Whether or not to participate in after-school music learning activities has a significant impact on the status of eighth grade students' music reading in Shanghai.(1)Taking part in after-school music learning activities could help students improve their level of music reading.(2)There was a significant difference between the group of participating after-school music learning activities with private lessons and three other groups of after-school music learning activities on the level of students' music reading.
