From the empirical point of view, eye movement experiments were used to explore the characteristics and representation strategies of automation students in solving general and professional problems. The study consists of two parts:Study 1: 2(skill level: high, low)× 4(topic type: conditional complete question, conditional redundant question, conditional insufficient question, plot detailed question)mixed experimental design,in which skill level is the variable between subjects and topic type is the variable within subjects.Study 2: 2(skill level: high, low)× 4(subject type: light control system of Skytower, traffic light control system, water level control system of water tower, automatic loading and unloading system). The skill level is the inter subject variable, and the subject type is the intra subject variable. The results show that:(1)no matter how to solve general mathematical problems or professional problems, the accuracy of high skilled subjects is higher than that of low skilled ones.(2)the eye movement patterns of the subjects with different skill levels in solving general mathematical problems are different, which shows that the main effect of the relative fixation times in the area of interest is significant, the relative fixation times of the subjects with high skill level are significantly more than those with low skill level, and the relative fixation times of the subjects with high skill level are significantly less than those with low skill level.(3)when solving professional problems, there are differences in eye movement patterns between skill levels. The main effects of average eye movement distance and the skill level of relative fixation times of topic interest area are significant. The average eye movement distance of high skill level subjects is greater than that of low skill level subjects, and the relative fixation times of topic interest area is less than that of low skill level subjects.(4)the main effect of question type is significant in the total fixation times, the relative fixation times of interest area and other eye movement indexes,no matter in mathematical or professional questions.(5)no matter what type of problem is solved, high skilled subjects tend to adopt problem model strategy, and low skilled subjects tend to adopt direct conversion strategy to represent the problem.According to the results, the following suggestions are put forward for the study and teaching of automation major:(1)cultivate students' logical thinking ability and independent thinking ability;(2)improve PLC programming ability through simulation software;(3)improve students' problem representation ability through professionaltopic training;(4)figure reasoning helps to improve students' working memory capacity;(5)cultivate students' emotional stability and sense of responsibility.
