Young academics are the active strengths for the research development in universities,and they play an important role in the context of building the world-class universities.Nowadays,an increasing number of young academics work in research teams,while the high-level talents in research team usually lead the growth of young academics,which is a key element for young academics' development.Using data of high-level talents and young faculty members from 45 state key laboratories,this study applied quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the impact of high-level talents on research outputs of young faculty members in research teams.Moreover,the mechanisms of high-level talents affecting research outputs of young faculty members are explored.The study finds that:(1)the number of academicians has a positive relationship with the number of young academics' articles,but its influence has a peak;(2)the academic level of Changjiang Scholars is positively associated with the number of young academics' articles;(3)the influences of high-level talents on young faculty member's h-index are not significant;(4)there is a negative relationship between the number of Distinguished Young Scholars and young faculty members' patents;(5)high-level talents may promote the research outputs of young faculty members through attracting resources by reputation,establishing proper leadership,building the networks of cooperation,deciding the direction of scientific research,and establishing a good research environment.(6)high-level talents may have a negative impact on young academics' research outputs.The main reasons are shown as follows: scientific research teams and young faculty members lack the guidance of high-level talents;some teamwork tasks such as technology transformation are mainly undertaken by high-level talents;high-level talents pay more attention to national and social benefits.Based on the research findings,several suggestions are proposed as follows.First,the government should strengthen the assessment and evaluation of high-level talents in state key laboratories,and pay attention to their contributions to the academic development of young faculty members.Second,the universities should emphasize more on the academic performance of scholars rather than the number of them when bringing in high-level talents.Third,it is necessary to help high-level talents to improve their leadership and management skills,and strengthen their skills in providing guidance for young faculty members,and build a good team research environment.Last,young faculty members should enhance their interaction and cooperation with high-level talents,which could benefit the quality of research and technology transfer.
