The Imperial College plays an important role in the history of higher education development in China,it lasted for thousands of years and was the main form of higher education in the middle and late feudal society of China.The Imperial College in the Tang Dynasty was not only the highest university with the nature of comprehensive university in Tang Dynasty,but also the supreme educational administration in the country,and it was also regarded as the model of school-running in institution of higher education in ancient China.Through the analysis of its school-running nature,the reappearance of its school-running status and the conciseness of its school-running characteristics,it can provide the traditional educational wisdom of school-running for construction of First-class Universities in China.This paper mainly adopted the literature analysis method and the historical approach,to collect and coordinate the relevant historical materials comprehensively,and using the theories such as the modern higher education theory and the modern curriculum theory,to make a systematic and in-depth analysis and discussion on the establishment and development of the Imperial College,its educational history,its school-running nature,its school-running status and its school-running characteristics.First of all,this paper analyzes the background of the establishment and development of the Imperial College of Tang Dynasty from the aspects of political,economic,scientific and cultural development and national cultural and educational policies,and discusses the establishment and development of the Imperial College from the aspects of preparatory planning,the school site selection and the organization construction.After that,it makes a brief review of the history of the development and changes of the Imperial College in three periods of " the past ","the present " and "the future".Secondly,by looking back on the development process of Chinese and Western Higher Education,we can get the following theoretical understanding:(1)the comprehensive university is the product of the development of higher education to a certain stage,the product of the differentiation of disciplines(knowledge),and the product of the deepening of scientific research;(2)Comprehensive university has the characteristics of being advanced,profound,professional,research-intensive and multidisciplinary.Then,based on this standard and analysis framework,we make a detailed study of the nature of the Imperial College in Tang Dynasty,and find that the Imperial College has five basic characteristics of a comprehensive university,which is the National Central Comprehensive University in Tang Dynasty.Furthermore,we put emphasis on the enrollment system,the course offered,the teaching activities,the teaching management,the teacher management and the students' future career of the Imperial College in Tang Dynasty.Through detailed,in-depth and comprehensive analysis,we tried to reproduce the grand occasion of school-running in the Tang Dynasty and glimpse of its educational conditions.After that,in order to better grasp the nature of the Comprehensive University of the Imperial College in the Tang Dynasty,we compare it with Paris University in the middle ages from the discipline,the curriculum,the administrative level,and analyze the similarities and differences between them.Finally,on the basis of a clear and objective understanding of the educational history,the school-running nature and the school-running status of the Imperial College in the Tang Dynasty,we found that state-sponsored,divided into "subject" teaching,comprehensive teaching,broad and open,these are the characteristics of its school-running.
