The Impacts Of Chinese Elderly Caring For Grandchildren On Labor Participation

Aging population is accelerating in China,there are more and more attention on elderly's labor from academia and social in China.However,the labor participation of Chinese elderly will be affected by many factors,such as individual characteristics,family and children.It has become a common phenomenon that elderly caring their grandchildren,which has become an important factor affecting the elderly decision on labor participation.Based on the data of CHARLS 2015,this paper uses Probit model to analyze the impact of elderly caring their grandchildren to their labor participation decision.The empirical results show that the behavior of elderly caring for their grandchildren may reduce the possibility of their labor participation.This paper further estimates this impact through splitting sample by gender,age and urban-rural areas.Considering the endogenous problem of variables,Probit simultaneous equation model is used to further systematically estimates this impact.The results show that elderly people caring grandchildren may negatively affect their labor decision.Meanwhile,adult children'structure and number will affect elderly labor participation decision by affecting elderly's behavior of caring grandchildren.The adult children' economic support and the elderly's economic support also have an impact on their lab or participation decision through influencing elderly's behavior of caring grandchildren.Elderly people's work decision-making is actually determined by comparing the benefits of time support between economic support.The results argue that the labor participation behavior of elderly people is closely related to individual characteristics and adult children's structure and intergenerational family economic relations.At present,the considerable pressure origin on unbalanced working pressures faced by the younger generation is transferring to their elderly parents,thus affecting the Chinese elderly labor participation behavior.It's important to develop socialized child care and education services to enable the elderly to choose their own work and life,which is of great significance to promote active aging.
