The object that we name as "boredom” arose in 19 th century, which is at the same time a kind of individual mood as well as a social phenomenon with according culture background. As a kind of “feeling” boredom appears not solely in modern times, however this "modern boredom" cannot be identified with its historical predecessors. The “modern boredom” bears significant connections with social changes brought by Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution. In this sense,it is reasonable to say that modern boredom is a phenomenon specific to the modern times.Modern boredom and its predecessors share on aspects that they are all discontent towards failure that human being encounters in the pursuit of meaning. Thus a consequence of modern boredom is failure of subjectivity,or the failure fulfilling appropriately the responsibility of an autonomous subject.A key feature of modern boredom is the popularization and democratization of boredom.Boredom pervading through society therefore has been influencing public life of the individual in several aspects. One possible method that may be helpful to cope with the damage made by boredom to modern subject is to foster its ability to fight boredom with active and meaningful experience, thus supporting appropriate involvement in public life.
