People are easily exposed to dirty money in their daily lives,and they may have dirty money effects once they are exposed to dirty money.The dirty money effect means that individuals will become relatively more selfish and greedy after being exposed to dirty money,and fairness and reciprocity will be relatively less and so on.Therefore,how to eliminate the dirty money effect becomes very necessary.Proper politeness is very important in daily life,especially in social situations.Politeness is a manifestation of courtesy and demeanor in speech and behavior in human communication.It is a standard of behavior in which people express respect and friendship to each other in communication.In the past,there has been no in-depth research on the elimination of dirty money effects,and politeness expression is a way of expressing respect to others,showing their self-cultivation,maintaining a harmonious balance between people.So can expressing politeness to others affect the dirty money effect? This study will explore it through four sub-studies in three parts.Study 1 uses field research methods to explore the existence of dirty money effects and the generalization.This study was conducted at four farmer's markets in Jinhua,Zhejiang Province.The fair index(which is the ratio of the actual weight of the vegetable to the experimental assistant(such as 500g)and the weight of the vendor)of vegetables purchased after contact with dirty/clean money was used as a dependent variable.The results show that:(1)the dirty money effect does exist,and the fairness index of the sellers who contact clean money is significantly higher than that of the vendors who contact the dirty money group,that is to say,compared with the clean money group,the vendors who contact the dirty money are more inclined to deceive the customers in the subsequent transactions;(2)the dirty money effect will be generalized.The fairness index of the participants from the clean money group was significantly higher than that of the dirty money group from the stranger.Study 2 first uses field research methods to explore whether politeness can influence dirty money effects.The results showed that:(1)the performance of polite behavior can eliminate the dirty money effect,but the speech apologize did not play the same role.The fairness index of the pretending wiping group and the clean money group was not significantly different,but it was significantly higher than the exposure to the dirty money group and the verbal apology group;(2)The fairness index between the clean money group was significantly higher than that of the dirty money group and the verbal apology group,but there was no significant difference between the apology group and the dirty money group.Study 3a allowed the participants to use the dictator game in the laboratory conditions,to further verify the relationship between the polite behavior and the dirty money effect.The study used a 2(money physical attributes: clean money,dirty money)× 2(with or without politeness behavior: no wiping,pretending to wipe)between-group design,with the assigned fair rate as the dependent variable indicator.The results showed that: In the absence of polite behavior,the participants who were exposed to dirty money was significantly lower than the participants who contacted with the clean money group,but when showing polite behavior,participants who were exposed to dirty money and those in clean money group had no significant difference in the fairness of distribution;on the other hand,participants in contact with the dirty money group had a significant higher fair rate in the performance of polite behavior than in the absence of politeness,so polite behavior could eliminate the dirty money effect.Study 3b further verified the effect of polite speech on the dirty money effect by measuring the fair rate of the participants under laboratory conditions.The results showed that when apologizing to the participants,the fair rate of the participants in the dirty money group was significantly lower than that was in contact with the clean money group and the apology group,but there was no significant difference in the fair rate of distribution between the clean money group and the apology group.This shows that polite speech can also eliminate the effect of dirty money.In general,the first study verified the existence of the dirty money effect,and found that the dirty money effect will be generalized to the situation from the stranger.The second and the third study is the further development to the results of the first one.Through the two situations of the field and the laboratory,it is proved that the behavior and speech of expressing politeness to the individual can eliminate the dirty money effect and reduce the selfish behavior.This research expands the theoretical system and connotation of money in the field of social psychology and behavior,and enriches and supplements existing research results to a certain extent;it also has certain reference value for the issuance of national currency,the formulation of circulation policies,and daily interpersonal communication in practical terms.
