A multi-state series system consists of N multi-state sub-systems connected in series.Each sub-system has its individual random performance level and demand level.If the performance of a sub-system exceeds its demand,the surplus perfor-mance can be transmitted to any other sub-system which is experiencing performance deficiency,to improve the reliability of the system.The amount of transmitted per-formance is limited by the random capacity of a transmission system.The entire system fails if at least one demand is not satisfied.An algorithm based on the uni-versal generating function technique is suggested to evaluate the system reliability and expected performance deficiency.Firstly,a multi-state series system model with performance sharing is researched,which is composed of several sub-systems connected in series by different transmis-sion systems.Then the system is introduced with the assumption of the model and the analysis of the model.The reliability of the system is obtained by using the UGF algorithm,and the analysis and numerical examples are given in following.Secondly,a main and reserve multi-state system with star structure is re-searched.The model is composed of several reserve systems which are connected to the main system by the different transmission systems respectively.Then the system is introduced by the assumption of the model and the analysis of the model,and the reliability of the system is obtained by using the UGF algorithm.The two cases of only considering the reliability of the main system and the reliability of the whole system are discussed,then analytical and numerical examples are provided to validate the proposed method.Finally,we optimize the structure of the two models.On the assumption that all the sub-systems have the same performance and demand level,with the increase of the number of sub-systems,the change rules of the systems' reliability are further researched by numerical examples,when transmission capacity is given.
