In the exam-oriented Chinese reading class,teachers ignore the difference between students,resulting in students' problems of low reading interest and strong utilitarian attitude towards reading.It is thus highly demanded to research differentiated instruction(DI)that aims at dealing with the situation.DI is the teaching in a class where teachers respect students' difference,satisfy students' individual needs,and provide every student a rewarding lesson via creating suitable teaching and learning environment,carefully selecting teaching content and applying appropriate teaching strategies.The necessity of DI lies in adapting to the reality of student differences and the inevitable requirement of achieving educational equity.DI has the value of humanism and the value of promoting students active development.The way to achieve DI is to differentiate the teaching objectives,teaching content,teaching process,teaching environment,and the judging of teaching outcomes.DI's theoretical basis includes Broome's educational target taxonomy,Gardner's multiple intelligence theory,and Babinski's teaching optimization theory and constructivist learning theory.Via the questionnaire survey on reading students and reading teaching in Hegongwei junior high school in Guihua,Xian'an,Xianning,Hubei,It's found that: a)the students had less extracurricular reading and lacked reading time;b)students just read books themselves in most of the reading classes and the students mark low for the class attraction;c)differentiating teaching content and caring student's difference in the reading class had a positive impact on students' reading,which indicates DI in reading class is necessary and urgent.The DI practice of the junior high school reading class consisting of 14 lessons such as the reading theory introduction,case analysis,topic book reading,good books sharing and class summary.It has to a certain extent achieved differentiation of the teaching objectives,teaching contents,and teaching methods,teaching process,teaching environment,and teaching evaluation.It achieved the desired results with certain problems that need further exploration.
